Who is Julio Baptista? The Video...

Yes one of the deals that we have been anticipating for months has gone through, Reyes has gone to Real Madrid with Baptista coming in the other direction to play for us on a season long loan…with a view to a “permanent deal” after the loan finishes. The Reyes deal has an option of 22 million Euro’s for Madrid to sign him as a permanent player next season.

So the question for some people who may not have seen too much of our new signing will be: Who is this chap Baptista? Well last season we wanted to sign him from Sevilla but Real Madrid beat us to his signature and he spent a year with them last season. He was amazingly successful at Sevilla but to be honest he didn’t reach his full potential at Real Madrid to say the least, which could be said of Reyes at Arsenal too.

Two different sorts of players, Reyes being a lightweight direct dribbler who has shown that his best position is on the left wing. A talented player none the less, but Baptista gives us something that we perhaps haven’t got. A massive build, powerful structure and an abundance of pace…strength is his most obvious asset and versatility being another. He can play up front or as an attacking midfielder coming from the centre…he has ALSO played as a defensive midfielder, but I don’t think that is his best position by any means…however we will have to wait and see what Wenger thinks of his best position. My own personal thought is that he will be suited to play in the hole with powerful bursts going forward to link up with the other team mates around him. Overall something exciting…AND BRAZILIAN…Thank GOD for that…

I have managed to dig out a video of some of his best bits, he looks like a wrestler, can score free-kicks, powers through defenders like shaq…and an important asset, he still plays like a Brazilian…tell us your thoughts on our new acquisition.

Just what we need, someone with some strength! All our players are far too flair and weak. With Gallas and the Beast Wenger has sorted us out a treat! Free Kicks, penalties, headers and looks like a hell of a finisher! Belter.

The writer on Arsenal.com said he actually aint that quick, but he sure isnt gonna come third in a race against cygan and a tortoise either.

As said above, great at dead ball stuff(seemed to put his pens left right up down hard accurate wherever he likes. Not a bad asset in cup comps for 0-0 aet.

Big, powerful and intimidating, and nice to see him flick the ball up over opponents (including keepers) and spin away, ala Vieira. Likes to shoot too which should quieten down a few recent arsecritics.

Great nickname too - lets hope he enjoys himself, and why shouldn't he?

Heres my guess on what we might look like 2006 - 2007(1sts/subs):

GK) Lemon, Poom, Almunia
RB) Ralph, Hoyte,Eboue
LB) Cliche, Flamini,
LCB) Gallas, Senderos
RCB) Toure, Djourou
RM) Freddie, Theo
RCM) Gilberto, Cesc, Song
LCM) Baptiste, Diaby, Flamini
LM) Hleb, Van Persie
AM/FW Rosicky, Van Persie
CF/ Henry, Adebayor

Could be worse. We could all be Spuds or Mancs.

just a gaddamned minute - is it just me after a few Friday lunchtime drinks - but 2:04 minutes into this video - our new signing (Baptista) can be seen (in his grey shirty days) celebrating one of his goals with his swop mate (Reyes) - how is this possible??? maybe too many lagers

Arsenal will now score from anywhere! Imagine our set-pieces! Gallas, Baptista, Toure, Gilberto! Anyone of those will head into the opposition net. The Gunners goes BANG BANG BOOM~

I think Baptista is just "what the doctor ordered". His direct style of play is what we should have had in the matches against Villa and City.

finally a tough player that will sort those out some teams, who like to give us a good kicking during away games (ie everton/bolton etc.) i dont think they'll wanna be kicking julio :D we've needed a player like him since vieira left.

Looks like he has blistering pace - would even keep up with Owen at the moment from what ive seen.
