I find it hard to have a defenitive opinion on this one. A surprise signing to say the least. And still leaving me nervous on the signings we haven't made. If Cesc is injured who will be our pass engine?? Or who will be the persistant monkey on the back when we are in defensive mode, like Flamini did (ran the most meters of all in virtualy every game). We are missing equal replacements for the details of our game. The big picture is there but so was it last year when we lost on a string of small errors. We need at least 2 other signings that don't need too much time to adjust.
Its a very good signing - a sensible signing. Hes a winner, hes won it all, and will now bring good experience to our young squad. All we need now is Inler from Udinese...and possibly SWP off chelski...IF IF IF they manage to sign Robinho...
If we do that, we will be firing!
i reckon denilson and diaby to come good this season. we have pass engines aplenty. and to imagine kolo's shift into midfield to be the adventure of the season. all we need is mr mozart himself to stay fixed up, we'll be singing.
With pass engines I mean players like Diego (Weder Bremen), Iniesta (Barca), Kaka (Milan), and so on.
Denilson and Diaby are somewhere in between right now. Not decisive enough in their choices when the game picks up pace.
It has to be a good decision when we can manage to prise a player away from a far superior team, so yes thumbs up!
Are you saying we need a player like Diego, Iniesta and Kaka, to step in when Fabregas is injured? listen to yourself! players like that are one in a million, we're lucky to have one in Cesc. If hes injured, you cant replace him, simple. We need our wingers to step up to the plate and hopefully nasri will bring us something along the lines of pires (a hero!) sometime soon, although I'm not expecting too much, he looks pretty sexy to me. Theo will hopefully also step up this season and, when he comes back, Rosicky will hopefully stay injury free. We cannot sign someone to wait around till Fab gets injured! If there is someone out there good enough, they'll be getting first team football.
And sorry, as for Silvestre, I think its a good signing for £750,000. I havent been getting any stick off any of my utd friends (sadly i have many) so I'm assuming they think we've done agood bit of business too. I'm not sure about this whole playing kolo in CM though, hes no ya ya and denilson has been playing well. Diaby and denilson are a better bet that kolo in my opinion. although wenger, if this whole story about kolo is true, may be about to prove his legendary status once more!
I think Silvestre is a very good signing, he'll bring much needed experience to our young squad & provide solid cover at centre-back & left-back.
We need a definsive Mid and ONE winger because we dont have one winger! All are supposed wingers are all naturally play centre mid... last time we had two wingers, we got to the champions league final (reyas & ljunberg)...that says a lot.
Shaun Wright Phillips would be a good buy and Inler centre mid. Then we would be a force!
we're obviously not gonna sign SWP. we've got walcott/eboue on the right and nasri/rosicky on the left. wenger isnt gonna think about SWP. like it or not hes gonna play those players. wenger knows.
Fergie had signed Blanc and Larsson before when he needed experienced cover temporarily.
I know these pass engines come as one in a million, all unique within their own rights. And sure enough Cesc is Cesc, not replaceable by any means. But without squad depth to replace him as to switch our style of play with a different pass engine is not there at the moment. You will see this year most teams will take out Cesc to limit the supply up-front. We need to be prepared for that. I feel Alonso can fill that gap. Just like Vierra did. Holding midfield when taken the lead, splitting passes to feed our front.
Note on the price paid for Silvestre: yes that's a steal for a player of his career quality but why has ManU taken it as a good deal and a fair price?? Any PL team of the lower echelons would have cought that sum for him in a heartbeat. I think it's a price from a seller that has calculated this purchase to be a risk for any potential buyer. So yes, I don't feel that confident it will a proven success.
what do you mean who will be our pass engine?
as you saw against west brom nasri can play some killer passes from deep, denilson can too, rosicky when he's fit and rvp when he drops deep.
even though fabregas is without doubt a phenominal player and easily the best we have in cm, i wish people would stop believing the media hype when they say we have no hope without fabregas. the guy is quality, yeah, but we don't need him on the pitch in order to create loads of chances just like we don't need henry in the team to score when ade scores them instead.
we aren't as reliant on our spaniard masterclass as the media say you know.
i mean do you really think if we have nasri, rosicky and vela (or walcott if he plays better)and rvp that we will miss cesc's contribution THAT much? not really.
i think this is a great signing. so many times last season we were leading in games and at 75 mins the young lads probably thought they'd won. Silvestre will prob kum on durin that last period wen we desperately need 2 hold on 2 our lead. He's solid. Wouldn't you rather ave him den senderos?
As I have seen against West Brom we set up a lot of short pass play (strong point of Cesc) and flooded their box in numbers (find a vid of the goal and you will see). If West Brom would have made more effort of countering such moments we would have had a rough start.
The players you named are all strong on short passes exept for Rosicky in good shape (and we don't know when and if that will ever happen again,do we).
It's not the media that gave me this opinion. It is the lack of silver ware in our trophy cabin.
good good brap brap
one thing i see people seem to forget is that kolo WAS a midfielder - so the switch is not that odd. He likes going forward and trying the odd cannonball. having been a rock in defence, i would rate him higher than diaby or song as a DM. His positioning has always been perfect, and coupled with someone like cesc (or diaby whom i see as more of creative than defensive) i dont think we could do much better. His hight has began to be a disadvantage the way teams are starting to play against us.
