These two clubs could not have had more varied starts to a season.

Arsenal have been little short of phenomenal while Portsmouth have been absolutely rank awful.

The Gunners began with a demolition job of an admittedly below-par Everton seemingly distracted by Jolean Lescott’s on/off departure for Manchester City.

Six goals were banged in by Arsenal that day which set them up nicely for their tricky away tie at Celtic in the Champions League Qualifying Play-off. Wenger’s men stuck admirably to their task to come away from the tie with a deserved 2-0 lead.

The squad is playing extremely well and more importantly, they’re playing with buckets of confidence. Generally, when Arsenal play with confidence, they score goals. Against a hapless Portsmouth squad, the Gunners could run riot.

Pompey are in dire straits. They’ve lost a host of their best players over the summer and have slumped to two defeats in their opening two games. They’ve no hope of getting anything out of this game.

So, with Arsenal nailed on to win this, where can you earn some cash? Certainly not in backing Arsenal to win at best odds of 1/5. Even backing Arsenal to be leading at half-time/full-time at odds-on does not appeal.

Going on the basis that there will be goals (all scored by the home team), my advice would be to concentrate on who scores the goals.

Both Van Persie and Eduardo are available at around 1/1 (2.0) to score at any time but try looking a little further down the list to find the real value.

Thomas Vermaelen has surprised Arsene Wenger with how quickly he has settled into English football. Expect Vermaelen to revel in this kind of praise and get even better. With Pompey’s defence in disarray, a powerful header of the ball like Vermaelen should be dominant in the away team’s penalty box. He should win header after header, especially with the service the wingers are likely to supply from corners and set pieces. Vermaelen is freely available at 7/1 and better.

RECOMMENDED: Vermaelen to score 7/1 with BET365
