Celtic v Arsenal (Champions League Qualifying Play-off)
Perhaps it is a sign that Celtic are a club in decline, or perhaps it is the bookmakers being overly cautious of Arsenal following their 6-1 thrashing of Everton on Saturday, but Arsenal are slightly bigger than even money to win at Celtic Park on Tuesday night.
To see Celtic being priced up at anything bigger than evens for a home game is rare enough anyway, but to see Celtic being priced up at about 7/2 seems outrageous. Celtic will not be pushed over as easy as the bookmakers are predicting.
Having said all that, I fully expect the Gunners to follow up that Everton victory with another resounding performance. Arsene Wenger will have the squad at boiling point for this vital game. Arsenal must take a lead back to the Emirates to take the pressure off that game and ensure that the Gunners are in the draw for the Group stages. A clean sheet is preferable and there is no doubt that they will strive to keep the Celtic forwards at bay.
Ideally, Arsenal must score twice at least to take a lead back to London, so the value bets in this game lie within the goalscorer market. Wenger should field as strong a team as possible and may make minimal changes to his winning 11. Like Saturday, expect the trio of Bendtner, Van Persie and Arshavin to start again, with the latter most likely to get on the scoresheet at 15/8 with Bet365, though you may get bigger if you shop around.
Arshavin’s movement and positional sense will make him a very difficult man to consistently mark throughout the 90 minutes, especially with Van Persie and Bendtner floating around for the Celtic defenders to worry about.
Arshavin’s performance against Liverpool last season showed he is a man for the big occasion and with there being a fanatical crowd creating a fantastic atmosphere at Parkhead, expect Arshavin to stand up again.
If you’re feeling brave and really fancy Arsenal’s chances of getting a positive result from Scotland, have a few quid on Van Persie to score too. His odds about scoring are skinnier than Arshavin’s, but if you’re lucky, you may find some 15/8 lurking about.
With Arsenal being a potent force going forward and their determined outlook on keeping a clean sheet, a 2-0 result for the Gunners is also being recommended.
RECOMMENDED:
Arshavin to score 15/8 (Bet365)
Arsenal to win 2-0 11/1 (Betfair)
