What a fantastic start to the season from Arsenal and it looks a continuation of their strong pre-season form. Before we get carried away we have to look at the opposition in Everton and they were very poor with Lescott leading the way in terms of excuses. Could one man’s desire to leave affect the entire team? He’s handed in his transfer request but was still asked to anchor the defence that subsequently shipped in 6 goals! Coincidence or the result of Arsenal’s overwhelming superiority? Probably a combination of both. Only one team can play like that to devastating effect and that is Barcelona.

Fabregas was simply superb in scoring two and assisting in two other goals and showed Arsenal’s devastating qualities on the counter. Arsenal looked to play a 4-2-3-1 formation with names like Eduardo, Walcott, Diaby, Rosicky missing from the starting line-up and this bodes well for Arsenal. They can offer more defensive support from midfield whilst counter attacking with ease. Moving on to tonight’s crucial Champions League clash with Celtic.

I’m mindful of Celtic’s Champions League home form, which has seen them manage to avoid defeat against the likes of Manchester United, Villarreal, Milan and even Barcelona in recent season. What they do is thrive on the passionate atmosphere playing with blood and guts and working hard. But the recent appointment of Tony Mowbray who has always made his name in management with an attacking football philosophy saw the Celts lose 1-0 against Dinamo Moscow who actually share some similar traits to Arsenal. In that game Celtic were the dominant team and were punished on the counter attack.

But whether the Celts have the firepower to trouble Arsenal is the question. Man for man, they are inferior to Arsenal. The keys are the managers. Should Mowbray look to press the issue then his side will be vulnerable to the sort of counter attacking we saw on Saturday. Should Wenger opt for attacking vigour from his players that should also lead to goals and at the very least, a draw.

Betting is also complicated by news of fitness concerns regarding Sagna, Denilson and Fabregas but all three are more then likely to line up at Celtic Park. Looking at the prices, the even money on Arsenal is a reaction to the Everton game and whilst they may still win the game, they’re shorter then they should be. The draw at just under 5/2 is tempting but a better and safer bet is the over 2.5 goals at 2.05. With both teams playing open passing football we could be in for a night of goals and it’s worth backing a 2-2 score-line as well!

My one fear is both sides will play a similar cat and mouse game negating the counter attacking qualities of Arsenal and will await the line-up before betting.
