That was a start even the most optimistic of all Gooners wouldn’t have predicted, but who’s complaining? It’s the perfect start to what’s going to be a very important league campaign, and for the obsessive, would have been even more perfect had we kept a clean sheet. Although, one negative of this result might be that Le Boss will not push for any more signings, which we still need, especially in case of injuries. The ratings:

Almunia – 7 – Seemed a little out of sorts to begin with, but grew in confidence as the match wore on, and came off his line effectively to clear the danger. Looks a seasoned No.1 now, much more assured and solid than at the same time last year.

Sagna – 6 – He didn’t have the best first half to be honest. Was found wanting positionally on a few occasions, but he improved considerably in the second half and was helped by a deflated Everton side. The fullbacks will need some time to adjust to the new system put in place by Wenger and the wide men up front will have to work harder while tracking back.

Gallas – 7 – Great goal by the ex-captain, and looked the part for most of the game. He’s going to be a key figure at the back, as noone around him is even near him in terms of age and experience.

Vermaelen – 8 – What a debut for the young man! He’s got the eyes of an assassin and he plays that way too. I love his attitude on the pitch, where he’s willing to give his life for the team, very Carvalho-like in terms of attitude, if you pardon the comparison. Has a good pass on him and made that extra effort to win balls in the air. Looks like a fantastic signing  already.

Clichy – 6.5 – Wasn’t as involved as he is usually, but it was an assured performance. His crossing seems to have improved just a little bit, although it’s too early to talk. Could have gotten involved in attack a bit more, but then again, it wasn’t needed.

Denilson – 7.5 – To be honest, he wasn’t really having a good game before he scored, but what a cracking goal it was. I think that finish required a lot of quality and technical ability, and the Brazilian pulled it off superbly. Moreover, the goal meant much more to the team, and gave the lads a lot of belief. His all-round play improved after the goal as well.

Song -8 – I would go with Alex Song for my man of the match today. He was awesome. He totally bossed midfield, looked at ease on the ball and passed well too. What an improved player he is. Anyone remember Craven Cottage a few seasons back? It seems like a distant memory. I just hope the ACN doesn’t do to him what it did to Toure when he leaves in January.

Fabregas – 8 – More than his all-round game, what struck me most was that he looked the captain on the pitch today. He seems much more at ease with his role within the team. His passing was spot-on as usual, and the finish for his second goal was sublime. Fine gesture after the goal as well.

Bendtner – 7.5 – I’m still not convinced wide right is his best position, but he performed admirably today. Showed fantastic control and skill in the lead-up to the first goal. Won many other headers too and surely must play in the centre.

Van Persie – 7 – Great delivery for Vermalaen’s goal, and a perfectly weighted pass for Cesc’s first. However, I’m not sure he’s a better bet than Bendtner in the middle of the front three. He plays for Holland on the right, so he must know how to play there.

Arshavin – 7 – Not his best game, but worked his socks off and passed the ball around efficiently. Hit the woodwork with a strange shot, which Eduardo turned back in. I’ve realized that we’re beginning to expect too much of the little man in every game. I was actually disappointed he didn’t score today.

Subs:

Ramsey – 6.5 – Looked comfortable on the ball, and got involved well, but Everton were too tired by then to really test him.

Eboue – 6 – Didn’t do too much during his stay on the pitch.

Eduardo – 7 – When he came on, I just had the feeling he would score, to wrap up a perfect afternoon, and he duly obliged. His first league goal since Man City two seasons back, and I can’t wait to see him in full flow.

  • A great performance. Wasn’t expecting that to be honest.

Was a good performance, but lets not get carried away. We need to keep this up and we will have a good season.

  • don

ultimately we wont win the title with denilson and bendtner in the starting XI, today wasnt a great arsenal performance, a good one, but we caught everton on a very bad day to say the least. will need to see in the coming weeks what level were really at, i hope a few signings are done before the window shuts. Song motm

  • Nick-A-Gunner

It was a good performance from Arsenal matched with a poor day in the office by Everton. I hate to be negative when we have won in such emphatic fashion, but I noted that our attacking front three did not combine well to conjure up any goal-scoring opportunity. Although its great to see us score from set-piece (something we did not do enough in seasons past), our open play, especially from our front three, was average. It is of course a new formation and it will be too early to judge them. Hopefully it would improve as the season goes.

On another note, Song was immense. He tackled, intercepted and passed very well. He also seems to be more composed and understand his role in the team. He is without a doubt our most-improved player for the last two seasons. Hopefully Arsene would put him there regularly and not in defense, which I feel Song could do a good job there, but it does not help in his development as a solid DM which the squad crucially needs.

  • Yeah, Eduardo looked sharp and like he wanted a goal when he came on – I guess you can’t ask for more in a striker.

He also looked particularly sharp in the Emirates Cup too and I fully expect him to have a big season this year.
