Are We Really Strong Enough? Transfers Needed. More On Vieira + Kalou + Hangeland
With only a short amount of time left before the new season starts; a lot of transfer rumours and possible activity seems to be rumbling to some conclusions in the background.
It’s been a traditional Arsenal summer; selling lots of players and so far, buying very few to replace them. It is a worry. Especially when both manager and players are vocal in suggesting that we are stronger than last season. I spilled my tea when Tomas Rosicky said that. However, it will be fantastic to see the little Mozart back. Let’s hope we finally get to see the best of him.
In terms of attacking players I think the squad is ok. Bendtner needs to take his chance this year and consistently lead the line for Arsenal. I think he and Van Persie will be the preferred pairing at the beginning of the season. I’m excited that Eduardo is back to full fitness and he will be hungry for goals. In fact I might have a sneaky bet that he will be top scorer in the Premiership this season.
What about Theo? He seems to have had a fairly quiet pre-season. This of course doesn’t necessarily mean anything but gooners will be hoping that Walcott will really push on this year and become a vital part of the team. Carlos Vela began with a bang last year but it’s difficult to see where he fits in. I think he may well be used as bait for a move for Hangeland – a player we could really do with.
Surprisingly, in the last few days, reports have come out about Kalou; a player who, has never really set the league on fire. I’m not really convinced he offers anything different to what we have. I get the feeling that Wenger will probably get his way with Chamakh, although he has said that the deal is over. Bordeaux know that they will lose out if they do not except Arsenal’s offer, so that deal could still happen.
With this all in mind, who do we think will start up front at Everton? Van Persie is clearly our most consistent striker and is ready to lead from the front. I think Bendtner will join him, with Eduardo on the bench.
I’m hoping that with two weeks to go until the new season we will see some transfer activity. With a reported £30m at his disposal I don’t think Wenger has any choice but to strengthen. If he chooses not to, then he risks the fans and shareholders fury if we have another disappointing season. It would be fantastic to see Paddy back in the red and white and I genuinely think it would be an inspired signing given his stature at Arsenal. The young players would learn a lot from Vieira and he would take a lot of pressure off Fabregas.
However, if Vieira does sign I still think we need to sign another defensive midfielder because quite frankly, we don’t have one at the club at the moment. Alex Song for all his improvement last year is simply not enough for a side challenging for honours. So come on Arsene, please bring in some strong characters and get this side moving forward again.
